In recent years, space has become a fundamental resource for monitoring the Earth, for the use of telecommunications, for observation and geo-location services. The use of satellite services and the data collected from space are already part of daily life, and they are assets able to anticipate the needs of society, improving many lives.
The constantly growing use of space assets with Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is representing the backbone of the new Space Economy. The space sector, which for a long time has benefited mainly from institutional financial support, is witnessing an ambitious intervention of private investors. Space technologies, when appropriately combined with the most advanced ICTs, represent the business trend that will characterize the possibility for many companies, in various sectors, to increase competitiveness on a global scale through innovation at all levels - from product/service, to processes, up to the overall business model.
In this context, ESA Business Incubation Centre Turin will support the growth of new Italian space-related start-ups. The activities, carried out in coordination with ASI and ESA, aim to offer to the selected start-ups several opportunities for technological development, business coaching and mentoring, legal advice, access to capital for growth and integration into the Italian and European industrial ecosystem.
The participating students from Politecnico di Torino (Turin, Italy) will be asked to conceive new and innovative technologies through the combination of current space-related technologies and ICT.
The fields of application may be of different nature:
- Earth observation
- Satellite communication
- Mobility
- Agriculture
- Energy
- Robotics/mechatronics or materials
- Environmental monitoring
- Satellite navigation or mobile services
The aim of the Challenge will be the creation of a new start-up, able to take advantage of the support provided by ESA BIC Turin and its partner network. The Challenges are worth 8 curricular or extra-curricular credits at Politecnico di Torino's Master's degree courses. Check the curriculum of your degree programme to verify if you have the possibility to choose a Challenge in substitution of your free choice credits.
Up to 30 Master's degree students from all areas of the Politecnico di Torino (Engineering, Architecture, Design, Planning) will be able to participate in the Challenge, divided into multidisciplinary teams. The teams will then work independently to find and design a solution to the challenge, with the support of trained mentors and under the supervision of a faculty member.
Students enrolled in eligible courses can apply to participate by visiting the challenge enrollment portal on the Politecnico di Torino website, in the "Online Services" section of their personal pages.
The application phase closes on February 18, 2022 at 13.00 (CEST): the outcomes of the applications will be sent by February 24 and the challenge will start after February 28 (the exact date is being defined).
